broadgreen house

Broadgreen House, Nelson, NZ.

Broadgreen is a 150 year old heritage home. Built with cob (monolithic composite earth) walls, it has withstood many earthquakes and storms and still stands pleasant and beautiful as the city has grown around it.

The box pictured below is a kind of old fashioned refrigerator. The wooden box extends through the wall on the shady side of the house, is screened on the outside, and has doors on the inside. Food placed inside can be kept cool for a few days even in summer, by the action of the cool breeze flowing through the box from the outside (this one has had boards placed over the outside, probably a recent effort to deter vandalism). On very hot days, the cooling could be improved by evaporation from a wet cloth draped over the outside.
