Wellington is surrounded by hills and has many walks (that’s “trails”, for you North Americans). Recently we took the ferry across the harbor and enjoyed the Butterfly Creek walk. It was absolutely jaw-droppingly beautiful, canopied by massive native trees, draped with palm branches at least four times my height, carpeted with a mass of ferns, lichen, moss…the perfect stillness broken only by occasional bird sounds and the flowing of the small clear creek. All this, only 10 km from the city center, and nearly devoid of people. It was like I imagine a rain forest to be. Unfortunately we didn’t pause our venture to take photos to share, but I am sure we will do so next time we do this walk!
I did capture this view of Wellington Harbour that greeted us as we climbed out of the Butterfly Creek valley.
